Crime Victims
Compensation Funding

Crime Victims Compensation Funding

Picture
In order to help violent crime victims and the family members of violent crime victims address psychological trauma, ICC provides counseling pursuant to the Crime Victim Compensation Program (CVCP). It is an opportunity for patients to discuss traumatic experiences in confidence with a qualified, experienced professional counselor. Potential program participants should ensure that they complete the application with the Crime Victims Fund to avoid incurring out of pocket costs for counseling services rendered. Please note that all fees for Crime Victim Services will be billed to the Crime Victim Fund. ICC will accept the agreed upon reimbursement in exchange for the allotted amount of psychotherapy sessions. The patient must consult with the Crime Victim's Case manager assigned to their case regarding coverage for any additional testing, evaluations, and/or additional referrals/recommendations for supplemental treatments not offered by ICC.  CVCP patients can also elect to continue treatment with ICC after exhausting CVCP program monetary limitations by using the personal medical insurance or other payment methods accepted by ICC.

Are you eligible for counseling services under this program at no cost to you?

If a violent crime was committed with the District of Columbia, or if you are a resident of the District of Columbia who experienced an act of terrorism outside the United States, Contact the DC Crime Victims Comp Fund to inquire about eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there someone I can talk to if I am experiencing difficulty emotionally while awaiting
our first session or if I'm not yet sure about receiving counseling services?

Yes, there is a DISTRESS HOTLINE, independent of our services which you can call to be connected with a therapist 24/7. Information disclosed will be kept confidential, with a few exceptions standard within the helping field.

More information is available here:  http://disasterdistress.samhsa.gov/.

What if I was already receiving professional counseling services prior to the crime?

Not a problem. Its best to only work with one provider at the time to avoid overlap, or competing treatment plans. Contact your current mental health care provider (psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health provider) to inform them of the most recent traumatic incident to allow them to incorporate new goals and strategies within your on-going treatment plan. You may want to still make contact with the DC Crime Victims Comp Office to inquire whether the fund  will cover the cost of your treatment for the most recent traumatic concern.

What should I do if I'm experiencing insomnia and having difficulty achieving sleep?

This may be a normal occurrence based on your current circumstances. But, don't dismiss the issue-  sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on both your mental and physical health. Therefore, its important that you make contact with either your mental health provider or primary care physician to allow them the opportunity to assess the severity of the matter, and to assist you with developing a plan, or exploring possible solutions, before the issue manifests into a full on sleep disorder.

Will I be restored emotionally to my pre-crime self by the termination of the allotted duration of service?

As with any mental health service, we don't offer guarantees. If we are not equipped to provide the level of care, or specialized treatment your current status warrants after an assessment, we will tell you. We will be glad to provide you with referrals to those who specialize in such areas.  If during the treatment process you feel that we are not a fit for you, please inform us, and we will again offer referrals to other services in the area which you may investigate further.  Otherwise, your outcome depends much on your implementation of applicable strategies, as well as, the implementation of healthy coping skills. Giving yourself permission to adjust your goals surrounding wellness as you move along the spectrum of healing will prove to be helpful. Keep in mind that results may also be impacted by any long-standing and/or unresolved chronic behavioral health concerns that may have been present prior to your recent contact with the alleged defendant. As with all traumatic events that may have occurred during your life span, you may be left with a changed view of the world around you. At best, therapeutic services can assist you with  the management of the resulting symptoms, and help you identify ways to buffer the stressors until they become less raw and less disruptive within your daily life. Its about assisting you in returning to a doable level of function- with the hope of improving your quality of life.

Why is it important for me to address my well-being?   Who has time to think of themselves in the mist of a crisis?

Since fighting for justice can be quite taxing- physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is not a short, nor easy process. And it doesn't always end the way you desire, or how you envisioned a victory. Therefore, it will be important for you to insulate yourself throughout the process and immediately after whatever disposition- with the assistance of a full support system. Taking care of your person will be key to your continued survival, ability to sustain your emotional stability, maintain a certain level of physical health, which will ultimately allow you to better function on the daily.
