Counseling in Groups & Workshops

Why meet in a group?

Group therapy can be a great way for people who feel isolated by a situation to realize that they aren’t alone – and they can connect to other group members for support, encouragement and feedback, along with the therapist who helps to facilitate the group meeting.

While it may seem uncomfortable to share intimate details about yourself in a group setting, often after the initial meeting members find comfort in the camaraderie of shared thoughts and emotions with other members. The group provides a sounding board to ask people about how you feel, how you’ve reacted and how your actions may be perceived by other people. It’s a safe zone where your facilitator and group members can gently and respectfully provide feedback about your behavior and offer suggestions about how you can break patterns and create newer, healthier responses.

What does group therapy mean at Ince Counseling?

At Ince Counseling group members interact in a confidential setting, listening to each other and providing feedback in a safe judgement free atmosphere. Our groups are usually under a dozen clients who meet with a trained facilitator to discuss one of three specific targeted areas:

Loss, Grief & Trauma

For many people dealing with the crippling effects of loss, grief or trauma, there’s often a sense of helplessness because of situations outside of your control. The group dynamic provides a place for members to take back control of their lives by understanding and strategizing ways to recognize and move past self-blame and self-disgust. For many this means owning up to their experiences without allowing themselves to be defined by that incident.

Couples Communication

This group provides the opportunity to observe and interact with other couples and see what strategies others have had successes and failures with, while learning about how you interact as part of a couple. This group provides feedback and helps members to recognize how they respond to situations and what they can do to de-escalate situations and resolve conflicts.

Anxiety

Group members work together to learn how to recognize their triggers and develop mechanisms for coping through anxiety management skills, like diaphragmatic breathing or meditation. Group members often find comfort talking to other members about their experiences and the techniques they’ve developed to deal with situations that cause anxiety.
